"Pagham FC - The Pride of Pagham"

Pagham 3 Southwick 0

John O'Hara Cup Round 2

25th August 2007

Pagham finally recorded their first win of the season, disposing of a spirited Southwick in the process. Gary Block chose to ring the changes in the Pagham side, with Ted Griffin, Michael Frangou and Keiron Urquhart all dropping to the bench. Dan Cox joined Danny Towers in making a first start for the Lions this season. He explained after the game that this was purely for team reasons. He also said he was pleased with the win which he felt was sorely needed, and that he was happy to see Michael Frangou open his account for the season.

The early play was nearly all Pagham, as Calum Britton exploited space on the wings to torment his marker. This persistence paid off just on the quarter hour when Britton was able to smash home a superb opening strike following good work by Wimble. Within a couple of minutes Pagham could have gone two up, but Brett Forden headed his chance just over. Southwick did make a rare raid into the Pagham area when Grant Bean had the sauce to find space and time for a shot which Wes Hallett saved. Southwick ‘keeper Gareth Cooke looked unsure on more than one occasion, and none more so than for Pagham’s second goal. Flapping at a cross, Cooke was stranded as Britton struck another sweet goal to add to his tally. Dean Lipscombe did test the Lions defence once more with a mazy run on the right, but it was left to Rob Wimble for the last action of the half. His run and shot with a few minutes to go saw the ball smack against the upright and be scrambled clear.

No changes at half time, and the Lions kept up the pressure. Tim Lester’s run from a Wimble through ball was thwarted by the Southwick rearguard. Wimble’s cross was cleared by Scott Stenning, but would be only a matter of time before Pagham scored again.Gary Block’s triple substitution just after the hour allowed all three subs into the action on a blisteringly hot day. Billy Chatfield found himself in unfamiliar territory when on the end of Ted Griffin’s corner. Fortunately for Cooke, Chatfield headed the ball just over the bar. Southwick’s watching fans had more cause for concern when Cooke dropped the ball in his own area. However no Pagham forwards were able to get to the loose ball in time. Sensing a weak link, Pagham decided to go all out to score again. Michael Frangou’s shot at Cooke was cleared for a corner. The ball was pinged into the area, and Frangou can count himself unlucky that his header went awry. Into the last ten minutes of the game, and Pagham scored their third. Rob Wimble twisted and turned with the ball at his feet and sent a decent cross into Michael Frangou who snapped up the chance with ease. Doug Peach, who’d previously had a boisterous game, was booked to spoil an otherwise battling performance. Ashley Hunter looked to maintain his place as Pagham’s leading scorer with only a few minutes of the game left. Receiving a ball to feet, Hunter put the ball goal-wards only to see his chance deflected for a corner. The inswinging ball forced probably the save of the match by Cooke. The visitors had one more chance to try and score before the whistle went on a superior Pagham display
