"Pagham FC - The Pride of Pagham"

Pagham 4 Ringmer 1

Sussex County League Division 1

10th August 2010

Carl Stabler’s lions roared to their first home victory as Joe Booker’s opener gave Pagham the ideal start. Using the same squad who had oh-so-narrowly lost against Crawley Down on Saturday, Stabler was able to take another look at his charges that had promised so much yet gained so little in their previous game. James Temple could have opened the scoring as early as the second minute, his shot being deflected over Ringmer’s goal. George Gaskin then went close. It was another five minutes before Ringmer could even muster a shot on goal through Kiran Patel. James Temple then shot wide before a Pagham defensive slip let in Daren Lok who couldn’t quite find the key to opening the scoring. When the first goal did come, it was from an unlikely source. Joe Booker had moved up for a corner, and it was his movement which saw the ball sail into the back of Rand’s net with just under a half hour gone. Scott Murfin could have doubled the score a minute later, shooting just wide. James Temple did manage to find the net on thirty five minutes, in a game which Pagham were in total control. With the back four of Booker, Misslebrook, Boston and Andy Weir controlling everything fired at them, it was only a mystery why Pagham weren’t further ahead. The last action of the first half saw Rand save Ringmer from further embarrassment with a fine save.

Sol Bowra emerged as the only change for Ringmer in the second half, and within eight minutes of the restart they could have got a goal back. A goalmouth scramble saw the ball only just plucked to safety by Wes Hallett. Both Daren Pearce and Andy Weir could have put Pagham further ahead before Ringmer stepped up a gear. Forcing a fine save from Wes Hallett, and striking the bar from range, the visitors did start to look as if they wanted to make a game of it. With little over a quarter hour left, Pagham went further ahead. A superb right sided run from James Temple was curtailed as he was tripped in the area. Referee Mr Baker had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, and Murfin scored his first of the game from a rebounded shot. Carl Stabler rang the changes, bringing on Lee Bradshaw to replace the hard working James Misslebrook. Ringmer then scored a consolation with a header from Mark Whiteman. This didn’t phase Pagham though, as the Lions were still looking to score again. With a little over two minutes on the clock, Scot Murfin scored direct from a free-kick for his second and Pagham’s fourth.
