Pagham fans can enjoy their Christmas as both the 1st team and reserves remained unbeaten in games played over the weekend.Knowing that a couple of wins would put the Lions back on top of Division 1, it wasn’t for the want of trying, and in the end had to settle for joint top spot going into the Christmas break. First came the incredible 3-3 draw at Horsham YMCA. After Pagham took the lead just before halftime, YMCA then stormed back to go 3-1 ahead with two minutes to play. Lions ‘Skipper Daren Pearce hit a sublime shot to make it 3-2, before James Temple made sure of a point with less than a minute of normal time left. The reserves took on Lancing at Nyetimber Lane, and a porous Lancing defence ensured the game was all but over at half time. Kerry Hardwell’s tremendous opener from range was followed by a superb strike from Nathan Parke. Lancing did tighten things up in the second half, but not enough to stop Michael Frangou hitting home a penalty and Nathan Parke hitting his second and Pagham’s fourth, Luke Cooper’s reserves having won seven out of their last eight games.
On a wet Tuesday night, Worthing United visited Nyetimber. In the corresponding fixture at Worthing in September, the Lions had hit seven without reply. A low-key first half saw that this didn’t look like being repeated. Dan Simmonds thought outherwise, with a brace of headers on 31 and 48 minutes which left the visitors reeling as the half time whistle blew. Seven minutes after the restart, Worthing scored as Markus Robertshaw had time and space to get the ball past Wes Hallett. Tom Broadbent then hit the bar for Pagham, whilst Schaaf for the visitors shot just over Wes Hallett’s goal. Pagham’s 3rd goal when it came was a touch fortunate. A corner ball found its way to Neil Murfin whose goal appeared to come more from a cross than a shot. Nonetheless, it left the Lions two goals to the good with twenty minutes to play. Both Howard Neighbour and Paul Jones hit the ball over as Pagham went looking for a fourth goal. Having been on the pitch for all of a minute, substitute Ross Woolf supplied the final strike with a well taken strike deep into injury time.
