Pagham Goal Glut

(Selsey Youth 0 Pagham Youth 6, Sidley 0 Pagham 3, Pagham Reserves 5 Steyning T. Reserves 1)

16th & 17th September 2011

To quote comedian Jimmy Cricket...”and there’s more”...but Pagham’s opponents would have found little to laugh about as the youth team, then the firsts and reserves hit 14 goals in three games over three days between Thursday and Saturday last. Even the one goal the reserves conceded was scored by a wicked deflection for an own goal. Friday night saw the youth team visit Selsey’s High Street ground and a brace of hat-tricks for both Andy Chick and Samed Gashi seeing the young lions get their teeth into the Seals. On to Saturday, and Pagham firsts visited Sidley United, who had previously only lost once in the league this season.

With the Lions’ reserves hitting six against Sidley’s seconds the previous Saturday, and Carl’s men looking to regain ground on Rye at the top of the table, there was a game to be savoured at The Gullivers. Having been beaten 2-1 at home by the Sids in last season’s last game at Nyetimber Lane, the Lions made no mistake this time. With Ross Woolf’s opener after only eight minutes, the home did try and get back into the game throughout the first half, but the game saw the Lions go in at half time in the lead. The second goal didn’t arrive until 80 minutes, a mistake by Sidley ‘keeper Bourne allowed Woolf to strike a looping shot over the ‘keeper to double the lead. A clash in the area with four minutes left allowed Dan Simmonds to finish the game off from the spot.

Back at Nyetimber Lane, Luke Cooper’s reserves hit six goals for the second week running, albeit one of them being at the wrong end, as Steyning Town Reserves were well beaten. With the own goal coming within the first minute, a shock result could have been on the cards in this Intermediate Cup tie. However, the Lions then took the game by the scruff of the neck, andit wasn’t long before Ryan Champion scored a beauty to level the game. He followed this up with another before new arrival Doug Peach marked his return to the ‘Lane with a tremendous long range strike. Next up was Ryan Champion with his hat-trick as a demoralised Steyning side were shaken to the core. There was just time for Kerry Hardwell to hit a fifth before the whistle blew on a thoroughly entertaining match.
