Pagham 3 East Grinstead 1

Sussex County league Division 1

21st August 2010

The high flying Wasps were bought crashing back to ground as the Lions showed their teeth in another comprehensive victory.Prior to the game, the visitors were top of Division 1, and on this showing, the Lions were the team who deserved to be there come the end of the match. Not four minutes on the clock, and Michael Frangou’s shot tested Adam Woodward, with Joe Booker doing the same from a header a minute later. East Grinstead were looking the better side though, with Liam Baitup’s shot sailing just over the bar after Ross Cable had telegraphed a pass into the area. The Lions could have had two more goals when chances fell to Scott Murfin, shooting over the bar, and James Temple, who’s shot rebounded out of harms way off a defender. The visitors took the lead on twenty minutes as Baitup’s fierce shot fair rocketed into the back of the net. The Lions weren’t about to be beaten though, and chances for them could have seen them three goals to the good before James Temple’s header did give them the equaliser on 36 minutes. With the Lions now in command, chances for Frangou and Temple ended the half with Pagham ahead on points.

No changes at half time, and only three minutes in before Pagham went ahead. Superb approach play involving Michael Frangou allowed Scott Murfin the space to strike home passed a hapless Woodward. Not four minutes later came perhaps the best strike of the match. A free-kick for the Lions saw the ball ping out to Andy Wier, and his shot from range was already a contender for goal of the season. Back came East Grinstead, with Baitup and Cable looking sharp, forcing more than one great save from Wes Hallett in Pagham’s goal. Scott Murfin’s game ended on seventy five minutes, allowing ex Gosport Borough player Dan Mosby to make his debut for the Lions. Switching to Frangou and Temple up front, the Lions were still running East Grinstead ragged, Temple heading just wide with thirteen minutes left. Ryan Cox came on to replace Neil Murfin as Stabler looked to perhaps increase the Lions advantage. Dan Bossill, so impressive for the reserves in their last game, came on to replace James Temple with five minutes left of normal time. A great ball in from George Gaskin saw Mosbey strike the ball over the bar, before Gaskin himself shot over. This was a matter of minutes before Mr Griffiths blew the whistle on yet another win for the Lions.
